Narrative Codes:
A guy called 'Roland Barthes' developed the idea of narratives being ruled around five codes, these in which have a purpose to maintain interest in such stories.
- The Hermeneutic Code - (the slow revealing of info)
This type of code relates to unanswered questions, where the story is then ran through answering them and revealing information as the story goes on. For example; a detective story would follow this code.
- The Proairetic Code - (suspense created by action)
This type of code implies further action from plot events. For example, an enemy is confronted, so suspense is then created from this as the reader waits to find out the resolution.
- The Semic Code - (descriptive cultural stereotypes)
This type of code reveals elements of certain stereotypes and cultures. It uses very descriptive features in an abstract formation. It doesn't just 'tell' the reader, it 'shows' them.
- The Symbolic Code - (opposition conflicts)
This type of code is structured using contrast, binary oppositions or sexual and psychological conflicts. Such oppositions can be expressed through action, character and setting.
- The Cultural Code - (common knowledge)
This type of code designates certain bodies of knowledge, being such as historical, mythological and scientific. This points to the knowledge of the way the world works as shared by community or culture.
Together, the codes function like 'Weaving Voices'.
